Questions about breast reconstruction with implants

Which surgical options need to be discussed before the procedure?

There are several options that can be tailored to your individual needs and wishes

1. Choice of implant: There are different types of breast implants. Today’s silicone implants offer a particularly natural feel and a soft, feminine contour. The right choice depends on your desired breast size, skin elasticity, and body proportions.

2. Implant placement: There are several options for placing the implant: Either subglandular, under the mammary gland (breast tissue) or submuscular, under the chest muscle. The choice of technique depends on the individual anatomy and desired outcome.

3. Incision techniques: There are various incision options to insert the implant. At our clinic, we prefer placing the incision along the breast crease. This approach leaves a discreet scar and reduces the risk of bacteria entering the implant pocket.

How does breast augmentation with implants work?

Consultation & Planning: We begin with an in-depth consultation to understand your personal goals. You’ll learn about implant types, placement techniques, and the full surgical process.

The Operation: Performed under general anaesthetic, the procedure typically takes around 1 hour — depending on the chosen method.

Post-operative Care: After surgery, you’ll spend a short time recovering. Mild pain or swelling is normal and will gradually subside. Healing can take several weeks.

Aftercare: A compression bra should be worn continuously for approximately 6 weeks. It helps to reduce swelling and support your new contours.

What are advantages of breast augmentation with implants for trans women?

Breast augmentation with implants offers trans women the ability to plan and achieve a stable, customizable result — one that aligns their physical form with their self-identified femininity.

Stable, long-lasting results: Implants offer reliable shape and volume, independent of individual hormonal conditions.

Individual freedom of design: The size, shape and placement of the implants are adapted to personal wishes and physical requirements.

Medically safe and proven: Modern surgical techniques and high-quality implants enable safe surgery with low complication rates – when performed by an experienced surgeon.

What are the risks and complications associated with breast augmentation with implants?

Infection, haematoma, tissue damage and scarring are among the general risks associated with breast augmentation with implants. Implant specific risks include malposition, rotation and capsular contracture. It is always very important to us to thoroughly explain these potential risks. To prevent complications, we follow a structured protocol designed to minimize the risk of capsular contracture and promote optimal healing.

Breast augmentation with autologous fat (lipofilling)

Breast augmentation with autologous fat is a gentle, natural option — especially suitable when moderate volume is desired and sufficient body fat is available. If your goal is a soft, organic contour, lipofilling may be the right choice.

Questions about breast augmentation with autologous fat

How does breast augmentation with autologous fat (own fat) work?

1. Fat removal: Fatty tissue is gently removed from areas with sufficient reserves – often abdomen, thighs or flanks.

2. Fat preparation: The harvested fat is processed and purified in a specialized process, ensuring only healthy fat tissue is selected for injection.

3. Fat injection: The purified fat is precisely injected in layers into the targeted areas of the breast to shape a balanced and natural-looking shape.

What are the risks and complications associated with breast augmentation using autologous fat?

In the hands of experienced plastic surgeons, lipofilling is considered a gentle and low-risk technique for moderate breast augmentation. Rare but specific risks include oil cysts and tissue calcification, particularly if fat cells aren’t transplanted properly — a concern mitigated by correct technique.

At the donor site, possible side effects indlude swelling and haematomas, sensitivity to pressure, asymmetries or dimpling, scarring, seroma formation, skin laxity and thrombosis.

Risk factors vary considerably based on the experience of the surgeon the surgical technique (gentle vs. aggressive liposuction), your individual anatomy and skin condition as well as aftercare

We’ll go over all this with you, personally and in detail, during your consultation.

What is the aftercare like following lipofilling?

Rest phase: In the first few days, it’s important to avoid physical exertion and pressure on the area to protect the newly transplanted fat.

Compression garments: If the fat was harvested from areas such as the abdomen or thighs, compression garments may be recommended to assist healing.

Slight swelling and bruising are common and typically resolve after a few days to weeks. The final appearance is usually settling after 2-3 months.

How long do the results of breast augmentation with autologous fat last?

Because lipofilling uses your body’s own tissue, there’s a strong likelihood that a majority of the transferred fat cells — around 60-70 % — will integrate successfully and remain long-term. We use precise techniques to gently extract, purify, and inject the fat, ensuring a high survival rate for these sensitive cells. Results begin to stabilize after about 6 weeks and are considered durable, particularly when supported by good healing and lifestyle habits.
